Our media program’s mission is to support all areas of the curriculum, teach
successful search strategies, facilitate the effective use of technology, and
encourage lifelong reading.

Duncan Creek’s Mission Statement:
The mission of Duncan Creek Elementary is to provide a safe, nurturing environment
of academic excellence, which will encourage children to become life-long learners and
responsible citizens in a global community.
Motto:
Where excellence soars!

Students in grades K – 1 may check out one book at a time from the
Easy – Picture Book section. Our picture books range in reading level from pre-K to
eighth grade.
Students in grades 2 - 5 may select two books at a time from the entire media center
collection. Books are due (or may be renewed) after two weeks.
All overdue books must be returned before checking out more books. A book three weeks
overdue is considered lost, and should be paid for so that the student may begin checking
out books again. If the book is found, payment is refunded.

Accelerated Reader is a computerized motivational reading comprehension program.
The AR book list of over 6,000 titles can be accessed on our school website.
Students are encouraged to earn Accelerated Reader points toward their individual goals
throughout the school year. Frist grade students begin AR in January. Various rewards are
presented to students in their classrooms for achieving 20, 40, 60, 80, & 100. Students who
reach their grade level goals will attend a magic show in the media center.
Points goals:
1st grade -- 20 points
2nd grade -- 30 points
3rd grade --50 points
4th grade -- 70 points
5th grade --90 points
All fiction and picture books for which AR tests are available are marked
with color-coded reading level stickers. Students are encouraged to read books
within their reading range, determined by the Star reading assessment test which
is given twice a year.

Each year our school hosts two Scholastic book fairs.  One will be held in
the fall and one in the spring.  Each class will have the opportunity to preview
the fair as well as purchase books.  These book fairs offer great, affordable
books that can help you develop a library for your child at home.  Books are
also available to purchase for your child’s teacher to use in his or her classroom.

Every year our school celebrates reading by honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday in March.
Many classes celebrate by reading all day. Guest readers also visit
Duncan Creek on this special day.

Our media specialists, Terry Starner and Karen Martin, and
local school technology coordinator, John Ross, work with fifth grade
students on a rotating basis to produce our daily news show.
The show includes school announcements, a weather forecast,
math problem of the week, today in history, and the weird fact of the day.
Students develop technical and performance expertise by working in our
state of the art television studio.

The University of Georgia's Children's Book Award program nominates
exemplary children’s books each year, and children throughout the state
vote for their favorites. At Duncan Creek, the media specialist and teachers
read these nominees to their classes and the students vote before
spring break. This program is designed to encourage students in grades
K – 8 to enjoy reading for pleasure.

The online media catalog of our collection may be accessed on any
computer at Duncan Creek with the desktop shortcut “Media Center Catalog”.
The catalog may be searched by author, title, or subject, and indicates the
reading level if the book is an Accelerated Reader title

The media center computers display our school website on the desktops.
This site is created and maintained by our LSTC, John Ross, and links our
school community to a wealth of information and school news. From this site, students
can access websites in all subject areas, and many online subscription encyclopedias

You may have at-home access to many of the online sources your students use at

If you would like a list of these resources and their at-home passwords,
